A restaurant concept that began in Dubai's DIFC in 2018 has become one of the city's most visible hospitality exports, pulling in celebrity guests and hundreds of thousands of diners across three continents this summer.

GAIA, created by UAE-born hospitality group Fundamental Hospitality, now operates in Dubai, Doha, London, Marbella, Monte Carlo and Miami, with pop-up venues added in St Tropez and Bodrum this summer. Across its global network, Fundamental Hospitality says it welcomed almost half a million guests at venues in London, Monaco, Marbella, Miami, St Tropez and Bodrum over the season.

The brand, alongside sister concepts Shanghai Me, La Maison Ani and NYX, has attracted a roster of famous diners, including Michael Jordan, Novak Djokovic, Naomi Campbell, A$AP Rocky, Jessica Alba, Rafael Nadal, Idris Elba, Travis Scott, Tom Brady, Kelly Rutherford, Nicole Scherzinger, Huda Kattan, Peggy Gou, Kesha, Burna Boy, Skepta, Ludacris, Caroline Wozniacki, Carlos Sainz, Jimmy Butler, Robin Thicke, Simon Porte Jacquemus, Dani Olmo and Hadise.

Why the numbers matter for Dubai hospitality

The scale of this summer's turnout is significant for a brand still closely associated with Dubai's dining scene. GAIA's pop-ups in St Tropez and Bodrum alone welcomed more than 60,000 guests, while its venues in London, Marbella and Monaco collectively received more than 134,000 guests over the same period.

London proved a particular stronghold. La Maison Ani London recorded more than 60,000 covers, averaging over 500 guests a day, and across the city, GAIA, La Maison Ani and Shanghai Me together welcomed more than 140,000 guests over the summer.

"London is one of the world's most competitive luxury dining markets, so welcoming a consistently strong volume of guests across our three venues is a significant achievement," said Evgeny Kuzin, chairman of Fundamental Hospitality. "It demonstrates that concepts born in Dubai can successfully compete at the highest level internationally and, in many cases, set new benchmarks for luxury hospitality."

From Dubai to the world in three years

Fundamental Hospitality was established in 2011 and has built out a portfolio that now includes Shanghai Me, Alaya, La Maison Ani, Sirene by GAIA, Maison de la Plage, Adaline, Kigo, Piatti and Izu Burger. GAIA itself is a comparatively recent addition, having launched in DIFC in 2018.

"In just three years, GAIA has become a go-to destination not only in Dubai and Doha, but also in London, Miami, Marbella and Monaco," Kuzin said. "This summer, we expanded further into St Tropez and Bodrum. To see the brand establish such a strong presence across these markets in such a short period of time is something we are extremely proud of."

For Dubai, the story is less about any single celebrity sighting and more about what it signals for the emirate's hospitality sector: a homegrown concept competing directly with established players in London, Monaco and Miami, rather than simply importing international brands into the UAE.
