Istanbul overtakes Heathrow

While Heathrow kept the annual title for Europe's busiest airport through 2025, the picture shifted by mid-2026. In July, Istanbul handled 8.15 million passengers against Heathrow's 7.86 million, making it Europe's busiest airport for that month. Heathrow's July traffic fell 1.5 percent year on year, while Istanbul grew 2.3 percent. Heathrow's Middle East route traffic dropped 20.2 percent annually because of regional conflict.

The trend had already been tightening earlier in the year. In May 2026, Heathrow led Istanbul by just 3,012 passengers, with both airports serving about 7.12 million travelers each. Heathrow's May traffic fell 1.2 percent from a year earlier, while Istanbul rose 2 percent.

Heathrow was Europe's busiest airport continuously from 1996 through 2019, lost the position during the 2020 pandemic collapse, regained it in 2023 and held the annual crown through 2025. Heathrow's chief executive, Thomas Woldbye, said in February that Istanbul could overtake London on an annual basis in 2026 or 2027.

Capacity constraints are part of the story. Heathrow operates two runways that are near full capacity and is seeking approval for a third, under a privately financed £21 billion proposal that would raise annual capacity to 150 million passengers. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander opened a consultation in June on the Heathrow Expansion National Policy Statement. In the meantime, Heathrow expects to serve 85 million passengers in 2026, relying on larger aircraft to squeeze out limited growth without additional runway slots, and projects its full-year total will decline 1.1 percent from 2025.

Istanbul offered 4.69 million scheduled seats in July compared with Heathrow's 4.49 million. Atlanta led global seat capacity with 5.58 million, while Dubai remained the largest international airport by seat count, with 4.35 million international seats.

Globally, air travel reached 9.8 billion passengers in 2025 across 2,817 airports in more than 180 countries and territories. The 20 busiest airports alone handled 1.59 billion passengers, about 16 percent of all global travelers, underscoring how concentrated the world's air traffic remains at a small number of major hubs, Dubai among them.
