Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority will open a 5-kilometre expansion of Emirates Road on 30th August, adding two new lanes for traffic heading from Sharjah towards the Wadi Al Amardi Area.
The expansion takes Emirates Road from six lanes to eight in the affected stretch, lifting capacity from 12,000 to 16,000 vehicles per hour. RTA expects the added capacity to cut journey times by up to 25% during peak hours.
Why it matters for daily commuters
Emirates Road carries more than 240,000 vehicles a day in both directions, linking Dubai with the Northern Emirates and handling a steady flow of private vehicles and trucks. For commuters travelling between Sharjah and Dubai, and for freight moving along the corridor, the route is one of the busiest arteries in the country, meaning even a moderate reduction in congestion during peak hours could be felt widely.
Where the new lanes run
The two new lanes cover the section of Emirates Road running from Sharjah towards the Wadi Al Amardi Area, passing near Al Awir 1 and Al Amardi Street. The project targets a stretch that has long funnelled dense cross-emirate traffic into a narrower lane count, a bottleneck that the expansion is designed to ease.
With the opening set for 30th August, drivers using this corridor should begin to see the wider road configuration take effect from that date, with RTA pointing to both the capacity increase and the projected time savings as the main benefits of the project.
